I have met many amazing athletes this week and they are all great. Some have been outstanding, literally standing out among so many fantastic stories and personalities. One of those individuals is Sam “The Iceman” Silver. I first encountered The Iceman during the first series of medal awards as he was the FIRST American medalist after winning the bronze in Swimming. And what he said and the bravado he brought to the podium was one of the most awesome things I’ve witnessed in a while. “I am in the Iceman,” he proclaimed. “And I live in an igloo!” What he went on to say just has to be watched and heard (specifically :47 mark):
That’s Dr. Jill Biden, wife of Vice President Joe Biden, presenting the medals. Near the :47 mark, Iceman issues his statement. “You think I’m giving up, you think I’m going to quit? NO!”
You see, Sam Silver is the Iceman and he’s NEVER GIVING UP, NEVER GOING TO QUIT. How amazing is that! I’ve found so many new heroes this week and the Iceman is King of that Castle. What lessons can be learned from the Iceman? Never Quit – Never Give Up! I think this guy graduated from the Jimmy V school of motivation.
Iceman, from Greenbrae, CA, has been involved in Special Olympics for 13 years and introduced Open Water Swimming to Special Olympics. His Iceman nickname originated from his open COLD water swims. And he doesn’t wear a wetsuit, just a Speedo. Your thinking, of course he doesn’t wear a wetsuit, he’s the Iceman! Exactly. As stated in his bio, he also enjoys learning computer programming languages, processing processes and contradictions. That’s my dude right there.
